Qualifications
1) Engineering degree or equivalent work experience.
2) Requires 2+ years prior mechanical design experience
3) A high degree of mechanical aptitude along with a hands-on approach.
4) Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly operations.
5) Strong communication, initiative, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
6) Strong knowledge of GD&T and print reading.
7) Demonstrated ability to train others and to be a mentor / coach.
Desirable Qualifications
1)Pro/Engineer experience is highly desired.
2)Knowledge of Caterpillar specifications and standards.
Responsibilities
This position will be responsible to check engineering drawings and notices for completeness, accuracy and conformance to established engineering standards and best practices at the new Black Hills Engineering Design Center. The Associate Engineering Checker checks assembly, piece part drawings and engineering notices for the required information as defined in Engineering Standards. This position will also be responsible for mentoring and training designers/drafters. The individual must demonstrate strong communication skills and a sense of urgency when dealing with internal customers.

The incumbent receives and systematically reviews and checks the new release and revised parts and assembly drawings for completeness of information, accuracy, and conformance to corporate product and process standards, material and process standards, engineering specifications and the engineering design references. This position assures that newly designed parts will function properly when assembled, checks the accuracy and placement of dimensions and assures the proper use of tolerances. Drawings are checked to assure that the part or assembly is graphically represented with adequate views, verifies the material and heat treat specification applications and assures sound engineering principals have been used. The incumbent also checks drawings for possible manufacturing and assembly problems and for cost reductions and ensures new releases will interchange with the previous change level parts in the field. The Checker also checks engineering notices for accuracy and completeness.

The Associate Engineering Checker discusses errors, discrepancies and/or deviations to standards with the designers, reviews any confirmed problems with the personnel responsible for the drawing, arrives at mutually acceptable changes and has those changes made by the drawing's originator. The incumbent strives to improve design and reduce costs through realistic recommendations, while detecting errors that have high cost potential to the Company.

The incumbent regularly confers with the Engineering Supervisor and Checking Engineers to communicate issues and to receive assistance and guidance as needed.
